9 Hollywood films with stunning costume design, to watch on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Disney+ Hotstar

Spanning from as early as 16th century Victorian gowns to the Jazz Age, and iconic leather-clad musical group of Grease in the 1950s, these movie will make you forget the ennui of your everyday wardrobe

Nostalgic sets, moving soundtracks and elaborate costumes are what breathe life into filmmaking. Whether its larger-than-life regal wardrobes that set the mood in period dramas, or subtle nuances like a symbolic brooch placed atop a white dress, thoughtfully-curated costumes help transport the audience into a bygone era. Actors have long described the evocative power of clothing designed to character. “The best costume design does this quiet work of setting a stage for the viewer,” said award-winning designer Ruth E Carter in her episode of Netflix’s design-focused series Abstract.

Ahead, we round up nine epic films that champion visual storytelling by way of corsets, age-old drapes, flapper dresses, leather jackets and much more.

The Great Gatsby (2013)

There’s no better way to imagine the roaring twenties than what's portrayed in the Leonardo DiCaprio-starrer, The Great Gatsby. Daisy Buchanan’s drool-worthy flapper dresses, fur collars, beaded headgear, and the mens suiting, were all produced by award-winning designer Catherine Martin, the mastermind behind the sultry cabaret outfits of Moulin Rouge! (2001) as well. For the ’20s-inspired magnum opus, Martin created over 1,700 vintage designs for the cast—including a collaboration with fashion designer Miuccia Prada for 40 classic styles that were a mixture of European elegance and New York glamour.

Colette (2018)

Keira Knightley is no stranger to wearing corsets. But what makes her titular character’s costumes in the 2018 biographical drama stand apart was simplicity and reliability to which they were designed. Costume designer Andrea Flesch’s vision for the 20th-century eponymous French novelist included clean-cut culottes, ruffled blouses, embroidered vests and finally, a menswear-inspired suit. A glimpse at the trailer will reveal how both Knightley’s character and fashion evolved in Parisian high society.
