How to avoid ruining Father's Day: Australia Post reveals how early you'll have to send gifts through the mail as Melbourne's lockdown triggers long delays

  • Delivery times for Father's Day gifts will double as demand surged in Melbourne
  • Australia Post is warning Victorians to send gifts to their dads by at least Friday
  • The number of parcels sent at the beginning of August spike by 150 per cent

Delivery times for Father's Day gifts are expected to double as demand for the service surges due to Victoria's strict stay-at-home restrictions.

Australia Post is warning Victorians wanting to send gifts for Fathers Day in the post to lodge them by Friday, or they may not get to dad in time.

The number of parcels sent at the beginning of August in Victoria spiked 150 per cent as a result of the strict Stage 3 lockdown, with people unable to visit their families in Melbourne.

Additionally, workers are unable to operate at full capacity thanks to social distancing.

Halfway through August the figure jumped again to 186 per cent, causing delays of at least three days for Australia Post, 3AW reported.

Australia Post Executive General Manager of Business, Government and International Gary Starr said Victorians need to allow three extra days for both standard and express post deliveries.

'If you lodged it today typically it would be two to three days, so you'd add three days to that,' he told host Neil Mitchell.

Mr Starr said workers had also been affected by the lockdowns as facilities are not running at full capacity, and social distancing was also limiting staffing numbers.

Some parcels from within Victoria to another address in the state have had to be diverted through Sydney.

'Sydney is not in Stage 4 lockdown so they are working full shifts, so we have been moving some parcels to Sydney to be sorted there,' he said.

Letter delivery times have not been affected by the delays.

Father's Day is on Sunday September 6, meaning cards next to be sent by Friday August 29 to get there on time.
