As it happened: ASX declines 0.7%, banks and materials drag

- The ASX 200 closed 0.7 per cent lower at 6116.4 points, a one decline of 45 points. It fell below 6100 points for the first time in seven sessions during the day
- Telstra shares fall 10c, 3.3 per cent, after paying an 8 cent dividend. End session an 18-month low closing price of $2.96
- Whitehaven earnings crashed 95% from $564.9m to $30m in the year to June 30 and shareholders will receive a massively trimmed full-year dividend of 1.5¢ a share, down from 50¢ in 2019
- Asian markets are also in red this afternoon with China's CSI300 matching the ASX. US futures were flat, or up 0.2 per cent for the Nasdaq
