From the Mar Menor to the Mediterranean, the beautiful region of Murcia, in southern Spain, provides everything tourists need to make a splash again this September – with a wide range of activities in, on, or under the water available in Europe’s largest salt-water lagoon and in Mazarrón and Águilas.

The Costa Cálida, or warm coast, is a paradise for lovers of the sea and watersports, with more than 300 days of sunshine a year, two seas, 250 kilometres of coastline and glorious beaches.

September is still considered summer in the Costa Cálida, meaning British travellers can enjoy their holidays out of high season, still with warm weather and with fewer tourists than in August.

The region’s superb year-round climate, and calm and shallow conditions – ideal for children – all can be enjoyed safe in the knowledge there is also a wide choice of top accommodation and myriad options for dining out – making it the perfect family holiday destination.

Murcia’s inland sea, the Mar Menor, is one of the most highly-regarded expanses of water for watersports, including sailing, canoeing, windsurfing, kite surfing, speed boating and stand-up paddle boarding.

And, just down the coast at Mazarrón and Águilas, not only can one enjoy life on top of the waves, but also underneath them, with some of the best diving spots in the world offering the chance to see the beauty of the rocky sea bottoms, as well as the spectacular underwater caves and grottos.

The Mazarrón marina also has 200 mooring points where the local clubs offer courses for both beginners and more experienced sailors. At Águilas, opposite the breakwater of El Hornillo, lies the Isle of El Fraile, a small island covered with rocky slope sea bottoms and seaweed colonies for the particular enjoyment of divers, while the fascinating sea floor at the foot of the Crag of Cabo Cope is also another diving hotspot.

And, again, Águilas offers a variety of other watersports, with courses given in many of the disciplines by qualified teachers for those who are yet to master the waves. Kayaking, sailing, snorkling, windsurfing, jet skiing and paddlesurfing are among the most popular activities.

For the less active there are still thrills to be had, as whale-watching is possible offshore and with boat hire. With practically no continental shelf off the coast of Murcia, the deep water provides a good habitat for pilot, sperm, and, even, fin whales. Plus, striped, Atlantic bottle-nose and short-beaked common dolphins are a regular sight, with the trips available from the port of Mazarrón or Cartagena.

Hotel Puerto Juan Montiel, Spa and Nautical Base is a four-star resort situated on the Águilas seafront, which offers hotel guests and visitors various nautical sport courses and lessons. The 126-room hotel is also home to many other excellent facilities, including a swimming pool, spa, padel tennis courts, mini-golf course and great dining options.
