The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has extended the validity of fitness certificate, motor vehicle permit, driving licences, vehicle registrations, and other documents till December 31, 2020.

This is the third time that the government has extended this deadline. After the earlier advisories on March 30 and June 9, it had extended the validity to June 30 and September 30 respectively.

Even though India is currently about to enter the fourth phase of easing lockdown restrictions, commonly called “Unlock 4.0”, several states are implementing restrictions after intervals in an effort to curb COVID-19 cases. This often leads to closure of government offices for multiple days as a result of which many motorists fail to renew their vehicle-related documents. Hence the decision was taken to extend the validity of documents considering the situation prevailing in the wake of spread of COVID-19 cases across the country.

“The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has decided to extend the validity of fitness, permits, licences, registration and other documents under Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 and Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989 till the 31st of December 2020”, the Ministry said in an official statement.

The ministry has also urged all states and union territories to implement the letter in spirit so that the citizens, transporters and organisations which are operating under this difficult time do not face difficulties.

This step of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is likely to help the citizens in availing transport-related services, it said.
