Nagpur: Buoyed by its candidate getting selected as Nagpur University vice-chancellor, Shikshan Manch, an offshoot of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), has now set eyes on second and third most important posts in the university — pro-VC and registrar.
As per NU officials, the Manch under coordinator Kalpana Pande has also set its sight on posts of four deans, which haven’t been filled ever since those were created in 2017 as per Maharashtra Public Universities Act, 2016. Pande refused to take calls from TOI for her comments.
The pro-VC’s post has been vacant since April 8 after Vinayak Deshpande’s term ended with that of outgoing vice-chancellor SP Kane. Deshpande was granted additional charge after Pramod Yeole demitted office in July last year after being appointed as Marathwada University VC.
The registrar’s post is vacant for over two years since Puran Meshram superannuated on June 30, 2018. Currently, Neeraj Khaty is working as acting registrar. Khaty, in fact, was selected for regular appointment in September last year, after undergoing the interview process, but he refused to join citing “technical grounds”. NU officials claimed that Manch members played a role in stopping Khaty’s appointment as he was not from the outfit and they wanted their man to be at the helm of affairs.
The officials claimed Manch seniors have even started identifying suitable candidates from among its members for the posts of pro-VC, registrar and deans.
Having majority in statutory bodies like academic and management councils along with the Senate, the Manch has become all more powerful leaving aside established players like Secular Panel, formed by senior academician Dr Vedprakash Mishra, and Young Teachers’ Association (YTA) led by another heavyweight Babanrao Taywade.
Nagpur University Teachers’ Association (NUTA), once a strong player in varsity politics, has faded into oblivion after Manch’s re-emergence, scripted by Pande and team in last polls for NU statutory bodies.
With its member Subhash Chaudhari occupying VC’s post and BJP senior Bhagat Singh Koshyari as chancellor, it would be a cakewalk for Manch to have its candidates selected as pro-VC, registrar and deans, say officials.
