Alok GuptaGURUGRAM: An underage driver was at the wheel of the Ecosport that collided with the Harley Davidson that Alok Gupta, who died in the accident near Cyber City on Sunday, was riding.
Hospital records show both occupants of the Ecosport were minors, aged 16 and 17. Police sources said the vehicle was being driven at very high speed. The teenager at the wheel has been booked and a case will be filed against his parents as well, police said. The two youths were rescued from the damaged vehicle and taken to hospital for treatment. “Both the youths are juveniles. Till Sunday, they were unfit for a statement. Police will now record their statements and also the statements of their parents,” said DCP (east) Chandar Mohan, adding parents of the minor driving the Ecosport would also be booked.
According to a high court ruling of June 2015, if anyone under the age of 18 is found riding a two-wheeler or a 4-wheeler, an FIR is to be registered against the parents or guardians of the minor under Section 184 of the Motor Vehicle Act, followed by a fine or jail term up to six months.
Alok Gupta (49), a resident of Sector 57 and chief financial officer of a private company, had left his home around 6am for Greater Noida when he met with the accident near Cyber City on Golf Course Road.. “The accident took place due to rash and negligent driving by a juvenile,” said Siddarth Gupta, his brother, adding Alok wasn’t driving fast.
Barrier on the median verge, police said, are installed to prevent vehicles from jumping to the other side of the road in case of an accident. These barriers can hold off vehicles up to speeds of 80-90 km/hr. A police source said the Ecosport was being driven at a much higher speed. Rahul Malik, who was just around 50 metres from Gupta’s bike, said the vehicle hit the Harley head-on and the rider had no time to react. “Alok was moving slowly and was on a side of the road. He died because of someone else’s fault,” said Malik, a friend of Gupta. Malik too was on a bike.
Haryana BJP spokesperson Raman Malik took Gupta’s family to meet senior police officials to demand a thorough investigation. “Police have assured they will take necessary action against the accused,” said Raman Malik. “All those who are responsible for the death of a family man with two teenaged sons should be punished as per law to set an example for parents who allow juveniles to drive vehicles,” Raman Malik added.
