Would A RAM TRX-Based Ramcharger Performance SUV Be A Good Idea?

The launch of the new Ram 1500 TRX super truck has been well received by the market, with the 702 Launch Edition units selling in just three hours despite a $92,020 base price.

As cool and capable as the 702 HP TRX truck might be, one can’t help but wonder what a full-size SUV would be like if it used the same hardware. One doesn’t need to look too far in the past to find a precedent as Dodge used to sell a Ram pickup-based SUV called Ramcharger from 1974 to 2001.

Now that the Ram brand is separate from Dodge, such a model could be called Ramcharger, with its performance variant likely to get the Ramcharger TRX name. We’re obviously just speculating at this point, as is Abimelec Design with these renderings of a hypothetical Ramcharger TRX. As with the original Dodge Ramcharger, the modern-day model would only feature a two-door body.

The CGIs show it would look sporty and aggressive with the TRX package, which includes custom hood, grille, headlights and front bumper, 35-inch all-terrain tires on 18-inch wheels, a generous ground clearance and bulged wheel arches, among other things.

A Ramcharger TRX would be powered by the same supercharged 6.2-liter V8 engine delivering 702 hp (523 kW / 712 PS) and 650 lb-ft (880 Nm) of torque in combination with an eight-speed automatic transmission and an off-road focused four-wheel drive system.

Expect similar performance figures as the Ram 1500 TRX, which does 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 4.5 seconds, the quarter mile in 12.9 seconds at 108 mph (174 km/h), and hits a top speed of 118 mph (190 km/h).
