Businessman who allegedly defrauded the City of Joburg of more than R7m out on bail

The sole director of Esizwe Technology (Pty) Ltd, Deon Pillay who is accused of not delivering 570 desktops after he was paid R7 529 244 by the City of Johannesburg, has been released on R50 000 bail.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Pillay was charged with fraud, theft and Contravention of the Prevention of Organised Crimes Act.

"His company, Esizwe, was one of the accredited dealers of Mustek," NPA spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane said.

"The core business of Mustek is the sale and distribution of computers and electronic products via its network of approximately 6 000 accredited dealers," she added.

It is alleged when Pillay failed to deliver the desktops, the municipality suffered a financial loss.

"The case was set for 5 October for the NPA to furnish the defence team with the contents of the docket," said Mjonondwane.
