More than 100 civil society organizations have appealed to the government not to raise the minimum age for women to marry. Organizations have claimed that doing so will do little to improve the health of mothers and babies.
According to the Child Marriage Act, the minimum age of marriage of a woman in India should be 18 years. But the government is considering increasing the marriage age of girls from 18 years to 21 years. For this, the government has set up a task force.
This task force will re-examine matters related to motherhood and marriage at an early age. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the formation of this task force during the budget this year. Currently, the girl's marriage age is 18 years and the boy's marriage age is 21 years.
