The no-confidence motion moved by the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) against the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government in the Kerala Legislative Assembly fell by 87 votes to 40 on Monday. Assembly Speaker P Sriramakrishnan made this announcement.

Before voting on the no-confidence motion, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan made a scathing attack on the Congress, saying that the party was in 'pathetic condition' and most of the Congress leaders were waiting to join the BJP.

Significantly, in the year 2005, 15 years after the motion of no confidence was moved by the CPI-MLA Kodiyeri Balakrishnan against the Oommen Chandy government of the then Congress of Kerala, the no-confidence motion was introduced against the government in the Kerala Assembly.

After a nine-hour debate in the state's 140-member assembly, the vote was 87 votes against the motion, while only 40 votes were cast in favor. Two members of the Mani faction of UDF's ally Kerala Congress Josh were absent during the vote. The only member of the BJP, O Rajagopalan, also did not participate in the division of votes.

Referring to the ongoing deadlock over leadership in the Congress, Vijayan said that the party was unable to choose the leader and senior leaders were calling each other an agent of the BJP. He claimed that most of the Congress leaders were waiting to join the BJP.
