NEW DELHI: The last few months have been nothing short of a nightmare for a 32-year-old woman, who was allegedly held captive and bound by chains at her own house in Trilokpuri by her husband, who used to torture her whenever she asked him to set her free.
The woman even tried to flee a couple of times with the help of her children but her husband always managed to hunt her down and put her under house arrest again. She claims that she wasn't even allowed to go to the washroom and was thrashed almost every day.
The situation has affected her mentally, due to which she is yet to disclose the reason behind her husband's actions. The police will investigate the case further.
According to Delhi Commission for Women(DCW) officials, the woman has been married for the last 11 years. The commission's Mahila Panchayat team got a tip off from a ground volunteer who informed the commission that the woman has been chained and was living in a miserable condition in Trilokpuri area.
DCW members Firdos Khan and Kiran Negi escalated the matter to the commission's chairperson Swati Maliwal, who immediately visited the given location along with the members after which they immediately reached the spot and saw that the woman was lying on the floor with her feet bound down by iron chains. She was in a miserable condition with torn clothes.
DCW team talked to her and learnt that she had three children from her marriage. She informed that her husband used to beat her brutally and she had been locked in chains from the last six months. The room in which she was kept had no fans and had a terrible smell as she was made to lie in her own excreta, dcw officials claimed. She was allegedly tortured and beaten so brutally that her mental health had taken a toll, Maliwal said.
Upon investigation, it was found that the victim's husband owns a flour mill and that the victim was perfectly fine earlier. Her kids also confirmed that their father used to beat up their mother.
DCW team immediately freed her up and are working out her medical treatment. The Commission is also ensuring registration of FIR in the matter. A senior police official said that they're in the process of registering an FIR (in process while this report was filed).
Maliwal stated, "We got this complaint from the Commission's ground teams - Mahila Panchayats operating in several parts of the capital. As soon as we received the complaint, I visited the given address. What we saw at the given location was absolutely shocking. The woman was bound down by iron chains and was living in a miserable condition. The torture inflicted on her have left deep scars on her. She is even suffering from mental health issues now. We have rescued the woman and have started working on her rehabilitation. We will try and provide her with the best possible treatment and at the same time also ensure strongest action against the perpetrators of the crime. Inhuman incidents like these break my heart and must be stopped under all circumstances.”
