NEW DELHI: The positivity rate - number of Covid-positive cases from those tested - in Delhi touched 8.9% on Monday. In July-end, it had reduced to less than 6%, signalling that the disease spread was under control.
Increase in the positivity rate, experts said, was a matter of concern and called for a strict adherence of social distancing norms and wearing of masks in public places. "There are so many people roaming around in the markets without masks. This complacency has to stop," said a senior doctor.
According to the Delhi health department, 11,910 people were tested for Covid-19 in the past 24 hours. As many as 3,826 tests were conducted using RT-PCR/CBNAAT/TrueNat tests and the remaining 8,084 were carried out using rapid antigen tests. "Of the total people tested, 1,061 (8.9%) came positive," said an official.
Total cases in Delhi crossed 1.62 lakh on Monday, while the death toll mounted to 4,313. Thirteen fatalities were recorded in the past 24 hours, the Delhi government's health bulletin stated.
As many as 1,46,588 patients had either recovered, been discharged or migrated, while the number of active cases stood at 11,626, of which 6,143 were in home isolation, it added. Of the 14,127 beds in the hospitals, 3,590 were occupied on Monday, while at Covid care centres, 3,831 beds were occupied.
Delhi recorded 1,450 fresh cases of Covid-19 on Sunday, the city's biggest single-day spike this month. It has seen a fluctuation in the number of cases since August 1, when it was 1,118. For the next three days, the number of cases reported in a single-day stayed below the 1,000 mark.
From August 5 to August 9, the number of fresh cases stayed above the 1,000 mark, until August 10, when it was 707. Three days between August 11 and August 22 saw less than 1,000 fresh cases - August 13 (956), August 16 (652), and August 17 (787).
