Aldi unveils radical plans to fuel ALL its 555 supermarkets and eight warehouses with renewable energy - 'because Australians want supermarkets to be sustainable'

  • Aldi are making the switch to powering their stores with wind and solar energy
  • All 555 stores and eight distribution centres will use renewable power by 2021
  • The power switch is Australia’s largest commercial on-site solar roll out to date
  • The plan is a part of Aldi's long term commitment to reduce global warming

Aldi has revealed it will power all of its stores with 100 per cent renewable energy by the end of 2021.

The supermarket giant will be using offsite wind farms and onsite solar panels to power their 555 stores and eight distribution centres in Australia’s largest commercial on-site solar rollout to date.

Aldi's internal data found 95 per cent of Australian shoppers want to be sustainable and believe businesses have a responsibility to help the environment.

However, 81 per cent of consumers linked switching to renewable energy with increasing product costs.

'Research shows Australians want to make greener choices at the checkout, but worry that these often come with a premium price tag,' Aldi Australia's customer interactions director Adrian Christie said.

'ALDI Australia’s renewable energy commitments mean that ALDI shoppers can buy with confidence at the lowest price - we’re committed to saving our customers money on every shop, while also doing our bit for the environment.'

Aldi's move to renewable energy will prevent 41,000 tonnes of carbon emissions entering the atmosphere every year.

This is the equivalent of taking 11,700 cars off the road annually or generating enough electricity to power 7,000 average Australian homes.

By the end of the year, Aldi will have 250 Australian stores and six warehouses equipped with 102,000 solar panels.

The plan is part of the company's commitment to reduce global warming and provide evidence to Australia’s top energy users that renewable alternatives are affordable when factored into long-term planning.

'Reducing emissions is a long-term mission for ALDI as a responsible Australian business,' Mr Christie said.

'We’re known for the great value we bring to our customers every day. Now we’re proud to say that great value is powered by good energy.'
