Rescuers sifting through the rubble of a five-storey building in Maharashtra's Raigad district on Tuesday found a five-year-old boy alive and his mother dead beneath the debris.

The deceased have been identified as Sayyad Hanif Samir (42), Navid Zamane (32), Nauseen Bangi (30), Adi Shaikhnag (12) and Mateen Mukadam (17). Search is on for the remaining 12 people.

Vice-president M Venkaiah Naidu expresses grief at loss of lives in Raigad building collapse
Pained by the loss of lives in a building collapse in Raigad, Maharashtra. My condolences to the bereaved families & prayers for the speedy recovery of the injured," the Vice President Secretariat tweeted quoting Naidu. Rescue efforts are under way and local authorities and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams present there are providing all possible assistance, the vice-president said.
Two sniffer canines specialised in detecting persons alive have not found anybody and locating cameras have been used but of no avail. The fifth and fourth-floor level have been cleared for B wing while search operation is under way on for the 4th floor. It becomes increasingly difficult to locate anybody through the VLC camera.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday conveyed condolences to the kin of the deceased, who lost their lives in the building collapse in the residential area of Mahad in Raigad district. "I am distressed/saddened about the incident that took place in Mahad. I offer my deepest condolences to the family members of the deceased," the Congress leader tweeted in Hindi.

Teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are at the spot for rescue operations. Canine squads were also deployed at the scene of the collapse, an official said.
There were around 40 flats in the building, the official said, adding those rescued were shifted to a local hospital at Mahad, which is around 170 km from Mumbai.
An official at the Mantralaya State Control Room of the state disaster management unit said the Tarek Garden building collapsed at Kajalpura in Mahad tehsil around 7pm.
A man died of cardiac arrest on Monday night after he was hit by a stone from the falling building, the IPS officer said.
