It had a depth of 10 kilometres and more than 300 reports came into Geoscience Australia within 45 minutes from people saying they felt the earthquake.

Geoscience Australia Seismologist Spiro Spiliopoulos said people had reported feeling "vibrations" and heard "rattling" as a result of the earthquake, but there were no reports of damage.

Mr Spiliopoulos said earthquakes were a natural phenomenon that occured due to stresses in the Earth building up over time but were "not common" in Queensland.

Mr Spiliopoulos said Geoscience Australia records showed there had been 47 earthquakes since 1950 in the 200-kilometre radius around Sunday's tremor.

The Bureau of Meteorology Australia confirmed there was no tsunami threat as a result.
