Vasco: Dr Sangeeta Sankhalkar from Vasco has been awarded Indian National Science Academy (INSA), Government of India Visiting Scientist Fellowship 2020-2021 to conduct research at the reputed institute/ university in India.
Recently, Dr Sankhalkar was recognised and promoted as professor by Department of Higher Education, Government of Goa. She completed her schooling from Vaddem Nagar English High School, New Vadem-Vasco, thereafter HSSC from MES College, Zuarinagar, BSc from Carmel College, Nuvem and completed masters from Goa University.
She was awarded PhD by Goa University in February 2001 for the thesis ‘Photo inhibition of Photosynthesis and possible role of Xanthophyll cycle in photo protection against oxidative stress in Sorghum’, under the guidance of Prof P K Sharma. She had received her degree in the presence of the Bharatratna, ‘Indian Missile Man’ and former President of India late Dr A P J Abdul Kalam.
Dr Sankhalkar did her first post doc research at Botanical Research Institute-I Wuerzberg, Germany in 2000. In 2006-07, she was awarded Government of India prestigious Department of Science and Technology (DST-SERB) Better Opportunity for Young Scientist in the area of Science and Technology (BOYSCAST) Fellowship of one year to UK for undertaking advanced research training in molecular Biology. She worked at school of Biosciences, University of Exeter UK.
She has published research papers in national and international journals. Some of the noted include Plant Science, Plant Mol. Biol, Current Science, Indian Journal of Experimental Biology, Phycos Net and Oryza etc. She has successfully completed DST (SERB) major research project and a UGC minor research project. She is serving Chowgule College since 1998 and is a recognised PhD guide by Goa University, and has held position as HOD, chairman of Board of Studies etc.
