BHUBANESWAR: Around 40 colleges have sought permission from higher education department to start new courses and increase seats. Higher education minister Arun Kumar Sahoo will hear their issues on the issue.

The colleges, mostly private ones, have filed appeal petition before the minister for starting new courses in regular subjects of science, arts and commerce and management courses. They have also urged the department to increase seats in regular degree subjects for enrolling more students in their colleges.

The minister will hear their appeal petition on August 28 and August 31 respectively and pass the order after hearing their views. The representative of colleges or advocate of the institutions can attend the hearing and present their views.

Prasant Rout, principal of Raja Madhusudan Dev Degree College of Science and Education, Patia, said his college has requested the department to allow starting of two subjects- computer science and home science. "We will urge the minister to increase seats in science subjects," he added.

Rout said they have developed a new computer science laboratory to start this new course. "Students can enroll for this course by paying less amount of money compared to other private colleges. We have faculty members to teach, train and guide the students," he added.

Recently, the higher education department had directed the principals of the government and government aided colleges in the state to ensure collection of equal fee for regular subjects. Presently, two types of fee are being collected in some colleges for regular subjects.
