Two robbery and rape suspects have been apprehended fleeing the scene in the Inanda area, after their car crashed during a chase.
It is alleged that, at 05:00 on Saturday, gunmen broke into a house in G Section, and demanded that the occupants lie down, KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele said.
"They ransacked the house, took a television, tablets, computer and cellphones. One the suspects raped a 29-year-old female," said Mbele.
As the men were leaving the house, police officers on patrol spotted two of the suspects leaving the house and entering a vehicle, with three other occupants. A woman inside the house shouted from a window for help and the officers gave chase, said Mbele.
During the chase, the men lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a lamp post.
"Three men alighted and fired multiple shots at the police. Police found two occupants that were trapped inside the vehicle and household items that they could not account for," said Mbele.
The two men were immediately arrested for possession of suspected stolen property.
"A case of house robbery was opened at Inanda police station. The arrested suspects are facing charges of possession of suspected stolen property, attempted murder and house robbery. They will appear at the Ntuzuma Magistrate's Court soon," Mbele said.
