Nearly 12 buses were parked close to the buses that were in flames. All the buses were stationary since March due to the Covid-19 lockdown.
On noticing the accident, the security guard tried to put out the fire using an emergency fire extinguisher. However, the situation went out of control. Fire and rescue personnel arrived at 12.20 pm. By then the fire had spread to the nearby private buses.
Fire and rescue personnel brought the situation under control after an hour’s effort.
A police officer said that the five buses belonged to three different travel companies. The cause of fire is unknown, the officer added.
Residents living in the nearby slum tenements left, fearing that the fire might spread to their houses.
