BENGALURU: The Common Entrance Test 2020 results announced on Friday saw a 10% rise in students qualifying for an engineering seat, from 78% last year to 88% this year.
Boys dominated the rank lists and were mostly from cities like Bengaluru, Mysuru, Mangaluru and Hubballi. Rakshith M from RV PU College, Bengaluru, bagged the first rank in the engineering stream. Shubhan R of Sri Chaitanya E-techno School, Bengaluru, and M Shashank Balaji of Base PU College, Hubballi, secured second and third ranks, respectively.
The CET - the gateway exam for admission to professional courses - was held on July 30 and 31 strictly following Covid protocols even as the number of positive cases in Karnataka saw an alarming jump. At least 63 Covid-positive students wrote the test and many of them secured good ranks. Of the 1.8 lakh students who had applied, 1.5 lakh were eligible for engineering. The number of students who got centum in biology also increased from 38 to 80. Three students got full marks in chemistry. There was just one girl in the list of toppers from four streams: Sanjana.
Deputy CM CN Ashwath Narayan, who announced the results, ruled out the test going online. While his predecessors had tried taking the test online, he said going by the success of the offline exam, they plan to continue with it.
Fees and seat matrix to remain same; academic year may start by November
The fees and the seat matrix will remain the same like previous years. In BSc agriculture, Varun Gowda of Expert PU College, Mangaluru, secured the first rank. Sanjana K of Base PU College and Lokesh B Jogi of Sri Ramakrishna Vidya Shala PU College, Mysore, stood second and third.
Sai Vivek of Narayana Etechno School, Bengaluru, topped veterinary and pharma sections. Aryan Mahalingappa Channal of Pragati Public Secondary School, Kota, was second in veterinary and Sandeepan Naskra from outside Karnataka was No. 2 in pharma. The minister attributed the better results to the online training programme. “It was well received. We intend to continue it for the coming years. Also, the entrance test was conducted ahead of other tests. It was also held well, following the standard operating procedures, which put students at ease,” he said.
The counselling dates will be announced after the counselling dates of JEE, NEET and NATA are announced so that they can be in tandem. There are two rounds of counselling and an additional round that will held. Students can conduct document verification online and need not come to KEA. Seats will be confirmed only when original documents are submitted. The academic year is likely to start by November or depending on what AICTE decides, he said.
“We will ensure all vacant seats come back to the merit list. Because our ranks are announced students will get an idea of which colleges they might get admission depending on last years’ cut-offs,” the minister added.
