Racing Victoria stewards were forced to call a premature end to Saturday's meeting at Moonee Valley after the track became unsafe for racing.

Persistent rain all day saw the soft seven track downgraded to a heavy eight by 10am, a heavy 10 after race three and by 4pm, stewards - in collaboration with the senior jockeys - decided to abandon the meeting.

"The soil is waterlogged; we've got a lot of surface water," RV's chairman of stewards Robert Cram said.

"There are three sections of the track that we've got water running across the track and parts of the track are just so waterlogged the horses won't get a good footing.

"Unfortunately we can't progress. Had the rain backed off and stopped we would have been a chance but the track has been deteriorating since race one.

"We've been keeping an eye on it but unfortunately it's reached a stage where it's just not safe to continue on."

The feature listed Carlyon Stakes, where prominent wet-tracker Jungle Edge was favourite to win, was among the final four races that were not run.
