HYDERABAD: After a major fire broke out in an underground unit of Srisailam Hydel power generation unit on Thursday night, officials are making efforts to rescue the nine workers who are trapped inside the unit.
The fire broke out at around 10.30pm, while the fire department was alerted after midnight. "The cause of the mishap is suspected to be a short circuit that triggered the fire. A total of 15 workers were inside, of them, six workers managed to escape soon after the fire broke out," said Sridas, station fire officer on the spot. While the other nine workers are still trapped.
As many as five tenders have been put in place to douse the fire. "Most than the fire, our concern is the thick smoke. We have no contact with the workers trapped inside," added the officer.
The firefighters are trying to get oxygen cylinders inside, but the entry and exist are blocked with smoke.
