A man who told his own mother she didn't deserve to live as he held her down and suffocated her for refusing to lend him money has been jailed.
Shaun Johnston, 37, tried to smother Pamela Gannon, 64, to death with a pillow during an unprovoked attack at her western Sydney home in November last year.
His chilling words were revealed after he pleaded guilty to attempting to strangle his sick mother at Penrith Local Court on Friday.
'You don't deserve to breathe and you don't deserve to live,' Johnston said during the horrific attack.
Ms Gannon, who has emphysema, suffered extensive bruising after fighting him off for two hours, before activating an alarm on her medical bracelet.
She was saved after her daughter-in-law Rebecca Zaccazan rushed in and and discovered Johnston in her bedroom.
He had tried to smother her with a pillow and throttle her with a towel in her own home in Lalor Park.
Ms Gannon said she still can't believe it.
Meanwhile Ms Zaccazan said the family is thankful the situation is behind them after the sentencing on Friday.
She was saved after her daughter-in-law Rebecca Zaccazan rushed in and and discovered Johnston in her bedroom
'I'm surprised he owned up to it,' she told Ten News.
'It will ease the burden on Pam who has been anxious about the case wanting it all to be over.'
Johnston was sentenced to one year behind bars after appearing via videolink from Parklea Jail on Friday.
Upon release he is prohibited from seeing his mother and banned from going within 500 metres of her home.
