Students seeking college admissions in a spot over Covid

GUWAHATI: Students seeking admission in undergraduate colleges this year, are keeping multiple options open because of uncertainties arising out of the pandemic.

Many students, who have already applied for Delhi University (DU)-affiliated colleges, also have their names in the cut-off lists of leading colleges here. Some of them even got admissions in colleges outside the northeast. All decisions will depend on the DU cut-off list.

Aditi Bagaria passed the CBSE Class XII boards with flying colours and her name features in the cut-off list of Cotton University (CU) for BA admission. Though the admission dates are yet to be announced, Aditi said she will take admission in CU first and then decide later about joining DU. Though her decision may block a seat at CU till the DU admissions are held, Aditi said she is keeping her options open.

“Since more students have scored over 95% this year, we know that the cut-offs are going to escalate further everywhere. We applied here in Guwahati considering the possibility of higher cut-offs in Delhi and uncertainties due to Covid-19,” said Aditi, who scored 97.5% marks.

Some students have also taken online admission in cities like Bengaluru and Mumbai, which are preferred destinations of NE students.

Tarun Chanda, father of another aspirant Rishika Chanda, said his daughter got admission at Wilson College under Mumbai University recently. After passing the Class XII boards with 94% marks, Rishika wanted to pursue higher studies outside of the NE.

“I don’t know if my daughter’s dream of studying under DU would be fulfilled, but we wanted her to get more exposure outside the region. As of now, Rishika has got admission in Wilson College but she will shift to a college under DU if luck favours,” said Chanda, a resident of Biswanath district in north Assam.

Rishika is at the 397th position in the BA cut-off list of CU. Though she is likely to get admission in CU, whether Rishika will get honours in the subject of her choice is a matter of concern. “We do not want to risk the careers of our students and hope the online classes begin soon at Wilson,” Chanda added.

“Beyond doubt, students are in a spot due to the Covid-19 situation. In previous years, we saw that 80% of students from Assam, who applied for admission in DU, did not apply for colleges in the state. But this time 95% of the students have applied both in Delhi and Assam. If the Covid situation improves, they will go to Delhi. They are also in a dilemma because of the possibility of higher cut-offs in DU colleges,” said Ranjan Bikash Borah, adviser, All Assamese Student’s Association, New Delhi.

He added that since medical and engineering entrance tests are yet to be held, the number of applicants in the general degree colleges have gone up, which may result in the escalation of cut-offs.
