South Goa beaches continue to face the garbage problem, particularly of plastic, and the fishermen complain of plastic getting stuck in their nets while they are out
for fishing.
Earlier last week, a large quantity of garbage, mixed with black oil slick, was deposited along an almost two kilometre Fatrade beach stretch in Varca, which was eventually cleared by the local panchayat.
This week, beaches in Benaulim, Colva and Sernabatim also witnessed large amount of plastic waste deposited on its sands causing inconvenience not only to visitors but the fishermen as well.
Since the start of this fishing season, traditional fishermen or ramponkars have been regularly witnessing plastic waste and other garbage getting stuck in their fishing nets along with the fish.
“This time there has been a little too much of garbage getting stuck in the fishing nets. We have slowly begun to catch some fish but separating the garbage from it is becoming a task,” said a fisherman from Benaulim.
A walk along the popular Benaulim- Sernabatim shore saw a large amount of garbage including plastic bags being deposited on the sands.
