Fourteen daily wage workers who were denied their salary of either daily wage or fixed salary for four months, urged the Margao and Fatorda legislators on Friday to intervene and resolve the issue as ‘Margao municipal council’ is exploiting and doing injustice to them.
“The MMC issued us an appointment letter in December 2019 for absorbing us on regular basis. We have thus started completing the formalities. However, the MMC paid us daily wage till April 2020. We kept quiet hoping better days will follow. However in June we were given another letter stating that the earlier letter (of appointment) has been kept in abeyance and hence since May this year we have not been paid by MMC, despite our tireless work during the COVID times in clearing the garbage,’’ a lady worker said. Interestingly, sources said, an office memorandum issued on August 17, states that these 14 workers have been appointed as daily wage workers from May 2 to June 30. “We went and met the chief officer, we also met the chairperson of the MMC, but nothing happened. We are working without salary for four months, informed another daily wage worker.
The former chairperson Savio Coutinho took the lead in highlighting the issue with the authority stating that they should get justice. With his efforts and gestures of a well wisher, these 14 workers were provided some grocery items ahead of the Ganesh Chaturthi.
