R&A chief executive Martin Slumbers insists he has "no regrets" over the cancellation of this year's Open Championship.

The decision was announced on 6 April during the height of the coronavirus pandemic, but conditions improved sufficiently for the PGA Tour to resume in mid-June and the European Tour to restart on 22 July, just three days after the Open was due to conclude at Royal St George's.

The PGA Championship was successfully staged behind closed doors following its move from May to August and the US Open and Masters are set to go ahead, also without fans, in September and November respectively.

"I think we're all learning. I think we've all learnt an awful lot in the last few months," Slumbers said.

"I have absolutely no regrets over the decision we made to cancel The Open this year. It was not possible for us to do it. It was the wrong thing to do on the timing.

"One hopes that the world is going to be in a better place come next season, but if it's not we will absolutely assess a behind-closed-doors Open Championship as one of the options come July 2021."
