For the fourth year in a row, Indore has been ranked the cleanest city in the country, according to the Swachh Survekshan 2020 report released by the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry on Thursday.
The survey of sanitation in over 4,000 cities was carried out earlier this year over 28 days. On Thursday, the Ministry released the findings through a virtual event that was supposed to be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, but he could not make it.
Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Puri said the Swachh Survekshan, in its fifth edition, had become the world’s largest sanitation survey, with 1.8 crore citizens giving their feedback.
Among cities with over 1 lakh population, Indore was ranked number one, followed by Surat, Navi Mumbai, Vijayawada, Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Visakhapatnam and Vadodara.
Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand were ranked the cleanest States with more than 100 cities and fewer than 100 cities respectively.
Other highlights are as follows:
- Jharkhand is the cleanest State in category of States with less than 100 urban local bodies.
- Jalandhar cantonment ranked the cleanest cantonment board.
- Varanasi ranked the cleanest Ganga town, a category introduced last year.
- Ahmedabad ranked cleanest mega-city (population over 40 lakh).
- Bengaluru ranked best sustainable city among mega cities.
- Vijayawada ranked cleanest big city (10 lakh to 40 lakh population). In this category, Jodhpur has jumped 149 ranks since 2019, making it the fastest mover.
- Mysuru ranked cleanest city in category of cities with 3 lakh to 10 lakh population.
- Ambikapur, Chhattisgarh ranked cleanest small city (1-3 lakh population).
- New Delhi (New Delhi Municipal Council) ranked cleanest capital city. Meanwhile, Lucknow has improved by 95 ranks in the past year.
