GUWAHATI: The BJP and Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) have welcomed the first step taken by influential student organization All Assam Students' Union (Aasu) and leading student-youth body Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) to float a new political party ahead of the 2021 assembly polls, though with different motives.
While Assam BJP president Ranjeet Kumar Dass on Thursday said that a new political party by Aasu and AJYCP will further divide the voters who are not favouring the BJP-led alliance in Assam, KMSS has appealed to all anti- Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) forces to stand united against the BJP-led coalition in the upcoming assembly polls in the state.
"We have no issues with the birth of more and more political parties that are against the BJP. Such parties won't won't have an impact on the BJP votes. It will cause loss only to the parties which are against the BJP-alliance. Want want 20-25 such parties to come up in Assam in the days to come," Dass said on Thursday, conveying his best wishes to the Aasu and AJYCP who have jointly announced an 18-member panel on Wednesday to steer ahead their political ambitions.
At a time when opposition Congress has rolled out the red carpet to the Badruddin Ajmal-led All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), which has consolidated its support in the minority dominated areas of the state, as well as other anti-BJP political fronts that are likely to come up under the aegis of Aasu-AJYCP and KMSS before the assembly polls, Dass said that BJP is not worried at the 'grand alliance' mulled by the Congress to take on the BJP.
"In successive Lok Sabha elections held in 2014 and 2019 we have seen such grand alliances formed by the Congress and other parties but they could not stop the BJP. In Assam too, despite all the opposition, people of Assam have brought the BJP to power," Dass added.
"If each of our 42 lakh BJP members can add one vote each, we will get 84 lakh votes. The equation is simple," the state BJP president said.
Though KMSS is not cleared it's stand on supporting the political party that is expected to take the final shape under Aasu-AJYCP soon, KMSS president Bhasco De Saikia said that the 18-member panel named by Aasu and KMSS has got the 'right persons'. "We welcome the formation of the 18-member committee. Hopefully they will show the right path (to Aasu and AJYCP)," Saikia said.
KMSS insiders, however, said that despite all possible efforts to come close to Aasu, the leading students' body has always preferred other organisations over KMSS to be part of their joint movement against CAA. "We are waiting for Aasu's signal and also our adviser Akhil Gogoi's release before taking a final call on the political front that is likely to be formed under KMSS. But, our main target is to defeat BJP at any cost. There shall not be any hesitation to join hands with Aasu-AJYCP for a common goal," said a KMSS leader.
