MANGALURU: Wild oscillations in fresh Covid-19 cases reported in the coastal districts - Udupi and Dakshina Kannada - of Karnataka continued on Thursday. After a record combined high of 700 cases on Tuesday and 609 cases on Wednesday, the districts tallied 526 cases on Thursday with Udupi accounting for 349 of these cases. The Covid-19 related toll continued to rise with the districts reporting eight deaths including six in Dakshina Kannada alone.
Udupi DC G Jagadeesha in the district bulletin said 137 of the new cases diagnosed positive were people with influenza like illness (ILI), 130 were primary contacts, source of infection in 63 persons is being probed, 12 had severe acute respiratory infection, six were domestic travellers and one an international travellers. In all, 54% of the cases or 190 patients including 102 women were asymptomatic and 159 including 104 men, symptomatic.
Udupi reported the highest number of 162 cases, followed by Kundapura 100, Karkala 76 and 11 were from outside Udupi. Discharge of 360 patients including 184 from hospitals and rest from home isolation that exceeded new cases meant the active cases in Udupi stood at 2818. Death of two women, with co-morbidities, both from Karkala took the overall Covid19 deaths in Udupi to 80. The district as on date has tested 61251 samples, Jagadeesha said.
ILI cases at 88 formed nearly 50% of the total new cases in DK. Source of infection in 43 patients is being probed, DC Dr K V Rajendra, said, adding 29 were primary contacts and 17 were diagnosed with SARI. Around 52% of the new cases at 92 were found to be symptomatic and 48% of them were asymptomatic. Mangaluru taluk reported 107 new cases, Puttur 16, Bantwal 14, Sullia and Belthangady 12 cases each and 16 were from outside DK.
The six new cases of Covid19 deaths pushed the overall death tally four short of 300 and included three patients from Mangaluru, one from Bantwal and two were from outside DK. All had comorbid conditions, Dr Rajendra said. With DK too doing well on the discharge of patients front at 187, taking the total discharges to 7129, the district that has reported 9712 cases thus far has 2287 active cases. DK has tested 78851 samples thus far.
