YAMUNANAGAR: Two motorcycle-borne persons had a narrow escape in the Kalesar National Park area when an elephant obstructed their way on Tuesday. The duo had to flee on foot leaving their bike behind to save themselves.
Kalesar wildlife officials said it is a routine affair as elephants often come out of the jungle on to National Highway (NH) 907 (Paonta Sahib to Yamunanagar) as they get in a playful mood during the rainy season.
Kalesar range wildlife inspector Sunil Kumar said two persons were overspeeding while passing through the wildlife zone.
“Two bike-borne persons were overspeeding. They had spotted the elephant from a distance of about 50m, but due to their high speed, they could not control their vehicle. While the speed limit through Kalesar range is 40 kmph, the duo was travelling at 60 kmph. When they attempted to slow down, their vehicle skidded. And they had to flee on foot as the elephant was very close to them. The elephant played with the bike for some time and went into the jungle. Nobody got injured in this incident,” said the official.
“The commuters passing through Kalesar National Park on NH 907 should adhere to the speed limit. We often notice that alarge number of vehicles drive through the forest at a very high speed,” said Sunil.
He said there are four elephants in the Kalesar range and all are male tuskers.
