BOSTON --- Strikeouts were part of the game for Michael Chavis even during his six-game hitting streak.

The Red Sox infielder was 10-for-23 with four extra-base hits between Aug. 5 and Aug. 15. Seven of the 13 outs he made during that stretch came by way of the K. Chavis fanned in 33.2% of his 382 plate appearances last season as a rookie.

Tuesday night brought unwanted history. Chavis became just the fourth Boston player to go 0-for-5 with five strikeouts. He went down swinging against Deolis Guerra to end a 13-6 loss against the Phillies at Fenway Park.

"Just a tough day for him," Red Sox manager Ron Roenicke said. "I talked to him a little bit after the game. You have one of those games where everything goes wrong and you can’t let it wipe out all the hard work and the point you got to recently."

Chavis struck out at least 20.4% of the time in all of his stops through the Red Sox system. That career low to date came in 2017, as Chavis played 67 games at Double-A Portland. He’s fanned in 42.9% of his 56 plate appearances to date this season.

"You’ve got to be able to forget some things," Roenicke said. "It’s a very humbling game as everybody knows."

David Ross (2013), Phil Plantier (1991) and Ray Jarvis (1969) were the previous three Boston players who found additional company on Tuesday.
