PMC fails to update records, pays salary to retired teachers

When asked, education department officials had no proper explanation
After matter was brought up in standing committee meeting, civic body now wants the paid money back
In a shocking revelation, it has been found thatPune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has been paying salaries to 19 of its teachers even after their retirement. The goof-up came to light during a PMC standing committee meeting on Tuesday. The committee has now ordered an inquiry into the matter.
The teachers in question had retired in March and April this year, but kept receiving salaries in their bank accounts instead of getting pensions.Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) corporator Mahendra Pathare raised the issue in the general body meeting, after which officials rushed to find out the facts.
Commenting on the lapse, Pathare said, “As many as 19 teachers retired from service in March and April. Ideally, after retirement ex-staffers have to apply for pension. Only when the process is completed do they end up getting their pension amount after a month or two. However, while the civic body continued to pay the salaries of these teachers, the former teachers didn’t highlight the lacuna either. What was even more surprising was that the education department officials were equally clueless about the entire episode.”
When the matter was brought to their notice, the authorities from education department had no explanation to offer regarding the lapse. Interestingly, civic body’s remedy to correct the issue is asking the teachers to return the excessive salary amount paid to them for the said months. The former employees have now been asked to submit cheques to the tunes of the salary sum doled out to them.
Considering the chaos, the standing committee has now asked the additional commissioner to conduct a probe in the matter. Hemant Rasane, chairman, standing committee, said, “We raised questions over the issue. However, the officials failed to provide satisfactory response. We have, therefore, asked the additional commissioner to conduct a detailed inquiry in the matter. Based on the findings, action will be taken against those responsible for the oversight.”
