PATIALA: The protesting faculty of Punjabi University demanding the timely release of salaries as well as pensions, getting a financial package for the university and maintain the autonomy of this prestigious institution, on Wednesday got the support of AAP leader and Member Parliament Bhagwant Mann who reached the university campus.

A large number of teachers, employees, pensioners as well as students have been protesting from past few days in front of the Vice-Chancellor's office at the University Campus over their demands.

The state president of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Bhagwant Maan reached here to join the protest organised by Joint Action Committee (JAC) and show his solidarity to the cause of the struggle. Mann said that he remembered his old days in this Punjabi University in the early nineties when he was student but instead of improving the financial condition of the university has got worsened.

He alleged that the Narendra Modi government at the centre and Capt. Amarinder Singh in the state had adopted a dangerous policy of privatizing every government institution from the level of roads to schools, calling upon the people stand rock solid against their evil designs.

He said that PM was all set to dole out government properties and national institutions, including the railways, highways, airports, LICs to private corporate houses, like the Ambani and Andani for peanuts, saying Punjab's 'royal government' was in a tearing hurry to overtake the Modi government in this race.

“After its nefarious move to shut down the Bathinda Thermal Plant, the govt in the saddle had been in the process of sacrificing Malwa's pride and mother tongue Punjab's glory - Punjabi University Patiala, which was allowed to wean away under a deep conspiracy, simply to hand it over to private hands. The recommendations of the Montek Singh Ahluwalia Committee clearly indicated dangerous moves of the Modi and the Amarinder Singh governments”, said Mann while adding that after AAP forms its government in the state, all government schools, colleges and universities are taken care of on a priority basis"

Bhagwant Mann assured the protestors that AAP would take up the issue of cash-starved prestigious universities and other government schools and colleges in the state including Punjabi University in the Lok Sabha and Punjab Vidhan Sabha.

Condemning the repeated statements of the state cabinet ministers about the empty state coffers, he argued that the state coffers could never be empty, had the state governments kept a tab on the tax evasion in the excise, sand mining, cable TV business, transport permit allotment, etc.

Later the members of JAC gave a memorandum regarding the autonomy of this university and increasing the state funding in form of grant to Bhagwant Maan.
