KOLKATA: A 110-bed Covid unit at
NRS Medical College and Hospital started operations on Tuesday, when the first occupants being two patients from the hospital's SARI ward.
After Medical College and Hospital, this is the second state-run teaching hospital in the city to start a Covid facility. "The unit will have 24 HDU beds, 8 ventilators and 9 high-flow nasal cannula with centralised oxygen system. A separate admission/reception counter has been created for the ward," said
Rajya Sabha MP Santanu Sen, also the chairman of
NRS Rogi Kalyan Samiti. "So far, NRS has been the only teaching hospital to have volunteered to start a Covid facility, with doctors extending support. If the situation demands, we can plan increasing the number of beds," Sen said.
Currently, MCH, ID Hospital, MR Bangur Hospital and CNCI Rajarhat are the state-run hospitals, along with some private hospitals that the government has acquired, that offer Covid treatment.
