Bidvest Wits were held to a goalless draw against Golden Arrows in an Absa Premiership clash at the FNB stadium on Tuesday.

Arrows came out of the blocks quickest with Michael Gumede hitting the upright as early as the third minute.

Divine Lunga then had a long-range effort tipped over the crossbar by Wits goalkeeper Ricardo Goss.

The Students, in search of a win that would have taken them up to third on the PSL table, then started dominating proceedings.

Forward Mxolisi Macuphu hit the woodwork twice before the end of the first half with almost identical headers, first after Cole Alexander whipped in a cross and then connecting with a long pass into the penalty area from Deon Hotto.

The Clever Boys continued to control possession in the second half but failed to break down a stubborn Arrows defence.

Wits came close to breaking the deadlock on the hour mark but Hashim Domingo flashed a free-kick wide of goal.

Abafana Bes'thende should have taken the lead in the 68th minute but Nduduzo Sibiya shot straight at Goss from point-blank range.

Wits had one final opportunity to get the winner five minutes from the end but Keegan Ritchie saw his free-kick saved by Arrows shot-stopper Sifiso Mlungwana.

The point means Wits stay 5th on the table while Arrows remain ninth, only outside the top eight on goal difference.
