
Atal rankings ARIIA 2020 HIGHLIGHTS: The Atal Rankings of Institutions on Innovation Achievements (ARIIA) 2020 has been released today. In view of the COVID-19 pandemic, the ranking is announced virtually. IIT-Madras has emerged as the best institute under the institute of national importance category.
For the first time, ARIIA 2020 has a special prize category for women only higher educational institutions, the official notification mentioned. The other five categories are — centrally funded institutions, state-funded universities, state-funded autonomous institutions, private/deemed universities, private institutions.
The major indicators for ARIIA were budget, expenses to support and revenue generated (20 marks), infrastructures and facilities to support innovations and start-ups (10 marks), awareness activities for promoting idea generation and innovation (20 marks), promotion and supporting entrepreneurship development (20 marks), intellectual property (IP) generation, technology transfer and commercialisation (14 marks), innovative learning methods and courses (10 marks), and innovations in governance of the institution (6 marks).
Indian Institute of Technology Mandi has made a debut in the Atal Ranking of Institutions on Innovation Achievements Prof. Ajit Kumar Chaturvedi, Director, IIT-Mandi, said, “We are ecstatic that our efforts in improving the curriculum through practicum based learning and focus on the entrepreneurial ecosystem is yielding results. IIT Mandi Catalyst, the first Technology Business Incubator in Himachal Pradesh, has helped over 75 startups since 2017 and is changing both the industry profile and entrepreneurial mindset. We aim to incubate technology-based start-ups focused on economic and/or social impacts. Our aim is to build a start-up and collaborative research ecosystem by working with academic and industry leaders. The ARIIA 2020 has given us the reassurance that IIT Mandi is going in the right direction”.
Prof. Appa Rao Podile, Vice-Chancellor, UoH said, “I am happy that UoH is the only Central University to be ranked in the Top Ten of ARIIA ranking 2020. This will inspire us to encourage high-quality research, innovation and entrepreneurship. More than quantity, we will focus on the quality of innovations and will try to measure the real impact created by these innovations nationally and internationally This will also set the tone and direction for UoH for the future development of the university to be globally competitive and be in the forefront of innovation”, he added.

The Atal Ranking of Institutions on Innovation Achievements (ARIIA) was launched last year by the Innovation Cell of Ministry of Education (formerly Ministry of Human Resource Development). Around 674 Institutions have participated in the ARIIA Rankings this year compared with 496 Institutions last year.

In Self-finance institutes, SR Engineering College, Telangana got the top rank in ARIIA ranking 2020. It was followed by GH Raisoni College of Engineering and Sri Krishna College of Engineering and technology - both these institutes jointly held rank 2.

Innovation must become the heartbeat for education. I congratulate all institutes who have achieved top ranks. I would not only like to cingratulate the heds but all the youngsters and people working in them. Other institutes which could not rank up should double their effort and focus more attention on innovation, said Naidu.
Farmers of country are agitated. They are ready to put hardowrk. Despite the adversity of coronavirus, the production of agriculture has gone up. Hats off to the farmers. They are the backbone of our country. The researchers, innovators coming up should put focus on agriculture, said Naidu.
Mere confidence will not suffice. We need to be self-reliant. For self-reliance, we need innovation. Greater emphasis is given to promote a knowledge society. The culture of innovation and entrepreneurship among students will make them out-of-the-box thinkers. They will be job creators and not job thinkers, said Naidu.
ARIIA is a major step to recognise the excellence in creating condusive envrionment. It is named after the great son of the country - late Atal Bihari Vajpayee. It was rightly named after him. ARIIA gives recognition to the institutes who are teaching in classrooms and teaching in classrooms.
India was known as Vishwaguru. Now, we must once again be the global hub for education. We need to tab the youth of India. They must be given guidance and freedom to explore new frontiner. There is a hidden talent in them and we need to recognise it, nurture it and promote it. Our education institutes must re-invent themselves to focus on innovation, said the vice-president.
Under the ARIIA ranking 2020, just like last year the IIT-Madras was ranked the best in the Institute of National importance index. IIT-Madras was also ranked as best institute under NIRF ranking. A total of 10 ranks were announced. The IIT-Madras was followed by IIT-Bombay and IIT-Delhi. At rank 4 and 5 were IISc and IIT-Kharagpur, respectively.
Avinashlingam Institute of Home Science and Higher education for women - ranks 1 followed by Indira Gandhi Delhi Technical Education for Women, Delhi. This was the first time owmen only institutes were ranking in ARIIA rankings. This year, only two institutes were ranked under the category.
Innovation and hence the ARIIA will be the foundation stone for the New India which will be self-reliant. The rankings aim to acknowledge the efforts of institutes which are coming up with new innovations and bridging the gap between industry and innovation, said Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal

1) Centrally Funded Institutions
2) State funded universities
3) State funded autonomous institutions
4) Private/Deemed Universities
5) Private Institutions,
and the first-ever category
6) women only higher educational institutions
Announcing that the nod has been given to change the name of Ministry of Human Resource Development has been approved and will be effective from today, the now Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank said that it is not just the name but also the mission and vission of the ministry which has changed. The HRD Ministry will now be Ministry of Education.
