Punjab Police on Tuesday booked a man for intentionally killing a dog by running his car over the animal in village Dandupur in Kapurthala’s Sultanpur Lodhi subdivision. The accused, Gurjinder Singh, an advocate and a dog breeder, was booked after a video capturing the brutal act surfaced on social media. In a tweet about the incident, BJP MP Maneka Gandhi alleged that Gurjinder has also tried killing other dogs bred by him by dumping them in a “lake behind his house”.

In the startling video that has been doing the rounds on social media, the accused first walks to the dog sitting right in front of his car and then walks back to sit in his vehicle, which seconds later zooms towards unsuspecting animal and runs over it. The dog does not die on the spot, but a little while later.

Sharing the video of the purported killing recorded by an onlooker, BJP MP Maneka Gandhi wrote on twitter, “He is a breeder and seller of dogs for dog fights. This is what he does to dogs when they are no longer useful. This dog died after 30 minutes of being in excruciating pain.”

Tagging Punjab CM Amarinder Singh and Punjab Police in a second tweet, she added: “Here’s a video of this man’s dogs, which he had been using for dog fights. At night, he took all these dogs & threw them in the lake behind his house. One dog drowned & the others have been rescued by PFA. This man should go to jail.”

A case has now been registered against Gurjinder under Section 11 (1) of the Prevention of Animal Cruelty Act 1960 and Section 429 of IPC on a complaint by Shalini, who heads People for Animals (PFA), Amritsar. Sultanpur Lodhi DSP Sarwan Singh Ball told The Indian Express that the accused is still at large and raids are being conducted to nab him.

The complainant has told the police that after receiving the video of the incident on WhatsApp at 3.25 pm on Monday, the Amritsar PFA team traced the car owner and found the car was registered in the name of late Harbans Singh. It was later found out that the car was driven by his son, Gurjinder Singh, she added. “The driver is seen to be deliberately killing the dog and a legal action must be taken,” Shalini told police.
