The Crown season 6 on Netflix: Everything you need to know about the final season

Bringing to life the last decade of the 20th century through the eyes of the British royals, the sixth season of the Netflix original is likely to hit screens in 2022. Here's everything we know so far about the finale

The hit Netflix original series, The Crown, brings to life the reign of Queen Elizabeth II and her transformation through the years. In giving the audience a look inside the palace and into the lives of the royal family, the show—many believe—has tastefully humanised the longest ruling British monarch.

Earlier this year, post the release of its third season, the series was announced to come to an end after its fifth season. Last month, however, creator Peter Morgan confirmed that they will film The Crown for a last sixth season, which will see a whole new cast arrangement. As we eagerly wait for the series to return, Vogue rounds up everything we know so far about The Crown season six.

1) The royal family will go through a cast change in season six

Every two seasons, the cast of the Netflix original series is revamped. In season six of the series, Elizabeth Debicki, will be bringing to life the last of years of Lady Diana, Princess of Wales

Queen Elizabeth II for season five and six will be played by Imelda Staunton, who is best known for her role as Professor Dolores Umbridge in the Harry Potter franchise. “I have loved watching The Crown from the very start,” Staunton revealed. She further went on to say, “As an actor it was a joy to see how both Claire Foy and Olivia Colman brought something special and unique to Peter Morgan’s scripts. I am genuinely honoured to be joining such an exceptional creative team and to be taking The Crown to its conclusion.”

Bringing Prince Philip to life in season five and six will be Jonathan Pryce. Pryce will be taking over from fellow Game of Thrones alum Tobias Menzies, who portrayed the role of the Duke of Edinburgh, during season three and in the upcoming fourth season.

Lesley Manville will be joining the cast as Princess Margaret as she takes the baton from Helena Bonham Carter, who portrayed the role of Queen's sister in season three and four. Details of the actors who will play Princess Anne, Camila Parker Bowles and Prince Charles are yet to be announced.

Is there a release date for The Crown season six?

The series wrapped up shooting for season four before the UK went into lockdown to stem the spread of COVID-19 and according to reports is set to release in November 2020. However, we will have to wait for at least for two years for the final season to hit Netflix as the cast is yet to begin filming. It is likely be aired in 2022.

What time period will season six cover?

According to show creator Peter Morgan, the reason why the show was extended for another season was to do right by the complex stories of each of the characters. “As we started to discuss the storylines for series five, it soon became clear that in order to do justice to the richness and complexity of the story we should go back to the original plan and do six seasons,” he said. “To be clear, series six will not bring us any closer to present-day—it will simply enable us to cover the same period in greater detail.” So it's safe to say, we won't be seeing our present day royals on screen. However, the late ’90s saw its own fair share of royal drama, which should make for good viewing.

What will you see in the final instalment of The Crown?

The storyline of season ended in 1977 and season four is expected to the begin in the late ’70s, finishing around 1990. While you can expect season four to cover the wedding of Princess Diana and Prince Charles, season six could see the breakdown of their marriage in 1996. It should also feature the separation of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson as well as Princess Anne’s divorce with Mark Phillips. The show is also likely to have an episode dedicated to Princess Margaret and her death in 2002 as well as focus on the Queen’s Golden Jubilee before closing the series.
