The current generation 2020 Subaru WRX and STI performance car need a complete remodel, but they are still outselling all other compact sports cars in North America this year. The next-generation 2022 WRX and STI won’t arrive until 2021 and 2022, respectively, but performance enthusiasts aren’t waiting.

A recent report from iSeeCars reveals the sport-tuned Subaru WRX and performance-tuned STI are in high demand and are the fastest-selling new sports cars. They take just 69.8 days to sell when the average sports car takes 107.2 days to move off the dealer’s lot.

The WRX and STI are also the fastest-selling used cars. The WRX and STI take 51.5 days to move off dealer lots while the average used sports car takes 70.4 days to sell.

How does the Subaru WRX and STI compare in sales with all other compact models? In the last twelve months, the WRX and STI have outperformed all other compact sports cars in North America, including the new mid-engine Chevrolet Corvette.

Subaru of America delivered 21,838 WRX and STI performance models to customers from August 2019 through July 2020. During the same time period, the WRX and STI outsold the 2019 and all-new 2020 Chevrolet Corvette by 3,850 units with 17,988 sales.

In the compact sports car segment, Subaru is winning big. Hyundai delivered 8,327 Veloster models, BMW 2 Series (8,015), Mazda MX-5 Miata (7,753), Infiniti Q60 (5,043), Lexus RC (4,591), Volkswagen Golf R (4,223 - 2019), Toyota 86 (3,398), Toyota Supra (2,884), Fiat 124 Spider, (2,646), Nissan 370Z (2,384), Subaru BRZ, (2,334), and Porsche Taycan (130.)

Honda does not split out the Civic Type R from regular Civic sales, so we can’t provide specific numbers. A source close to Honda said in 2018 Honda sold 4,100 Civic Type R, performance models. The Subaru WRX and STI were also the best selling sports car in 2019.

With a starting MSRP of $28,395, including destination, the WRX is arguably the best performance value. You can buy a higher performance STI for $37,895, including all fees and offers more fun for the money.

The sport-tuned 2020 Subaru WRX and performance-tuned WRX STI need a complete remodel, but the two performance sedans are in high demand and the best-selling compact sports car in America.
