The name of the Ministry of Education was changed to the Ministry of Human Resource Development in 1985 during the tenure of the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. The NEP was introduced the following year and was revised in 1992. PV Narasimha Rao became the first human resource development minister in the Rajiv Gandhi cabinet.
