Academy set for virtual celebration of Konkani Manyata Diwas on Thursday

MANGALURU: Celebration of Konkani Manyata Diwas, a day that 50-lakh odd Konkani speaking population across India cherish, is all set to go virtual this year. Observed since August 20, 1992 to mark the inclusion of Konkani in the 8
th Schedule of Indian Constitution as one among the 22 official languages in India, the Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy will observe the day in a virtual mode sans the public gathering at the venue of the event on Thursday.
Dr Jagadish Pai, chairman of the academy said elected representatives – Nalin Kumar Kateel, DK member of parliament, D Vedavyas Kamath, Mangaluru City South MLA, Diwakar Pandeshwar, mayor and Sudhakar Shet, president, Daivajna Brahmanara Sangha will join Kota Shrinivas Poojari, district minister in the official celebration. Local cable TV network – Namma Kudla will livestream the programme to viewers on its network, he said.
In addition, the academy has also planned to broadcast the event live on Facebook and YouTube, Dr Pai said, adding Daivajna Kalyana Mantap at Ashoknagar, venue of the event will not have an active audience. The academy will felicitate Pratap Simha Nayak and Shantharam Siddi, members of the community who have been elected to the state legislative council recently, he said. Konkani yakshagana by women from the community, chorus singing, variety entertainment, Konkani comedy drama will follow the stage function.
In addition, the academy has also arranged for virtual meeting mode for its former presidents and other activists who have worked for the cause of the language and they will present their views virtually on this occasion, he noted. Restrictions placed on public gatherings due to the global pandemic has necessitated the present arrangement, he said, requesting all aficionados of the language to make their presence felt at the celebration, albeit digitally.
