PATIALA: The inquiry reports over a couple of alleged scams will now probably be opened for discussion in the next syndicate meeting for the discussion as the Punjabi University Patiala authorities have been asked to share these reports with its syndicate members.

The authorities of Punjabi University on Monday held an online meeting of its syndicate members after allegedly almost a year and government officials who were also syndicate members have asked the university to rationalise its financial implications. Besides, the university authorities were asked to hold its syndicate meeting every month to maintain its sanctity.

“The syndicate members who were faculty members of the university raised objections after the University registrar opened one of the inquiry reports and tabled some suggestions. The other syndicate members said they were unable to comment over the issue as they haven’t seen any reports and demanded that they should also be provided with these reports for appropriate discussions. Following this, the secretary higher education asked the university authorities to provide these inquiry reports to its syndicate members”, said syndicate member Nar Bahadur Verma.

Notably, in 2017 a number of inquiries were marked in to alleged scams by the then officiating Vice-Chancellor IAS Anurag Verma after 16 different complaints alleging monetary and recruitment corruption and others were tabled before him by some of the faculty members in Punjabi University. After the inquiry reports were submitted the VC formed a two-member committee to look into these reports following which the panel submitted its finding in July 2018 however, a year later three-member sub-committee was formed in 2019 to suggest the action to be taken against those found guilty.

“Some of the major decisions were taken in relation to the rationalisation of the vacancies filled or being filled and the financial implications to be assessed before any recruitments or promotion decisions. The members also passed a decision to hold a syndicate meeting every month. The need for rationalisation of workload and teachers was also discussed in the meeting. A valley-ball coach Dal Singh Brar has been given additional charge of Assistant Director Sports in the University following syndicate approval,” said, syndicate member and University’s Dean Languages Satnam Singh Sandhu.

The syndicate members revealed that the university has also been asked to get work audit done before extending the tenure of Ad-hoc, contractual, work charges or daily wages employees and assign the important posts like Dean Academics, Dean Colleges, Dean Research etc. on seniority basis while the posts of Registrar and Controller Examination should be filled on regular basis instead of giving additional charge.

The meeting was held under the chairmanship of Vice-Chancellor Prof. B. S. Ghuman and was attended by the Secretary Higher Education Punjab and Member of Syndicate Rahul Bhandari, Dean Academic Affairs Prof. Gurdeep Singh Batra; Director, Department of Education (Colleges) Prof. Indu Malhotra; Punjab Government nominee Harinderpal Singh Harimann, K.D. Singh, Nar Bahadur Verma; Director, Language Department Punjab, Karamjeet Kaur, and other nominated members including Prof. Jyotsana, Prof. BS Sandhu, Prof. Satnam Singh, Prof. Sarbjinder Singh, Prof. Jagrup Kaur, Prof. Sukhveer Singh, Prof. Chiranjiv Kaur, Prof. Simrat Kaur and Registrar of the University Prof. Davinderpal Singh Sidhu

VC Prof. Ghuman said that the Punjabi University reaching at 64th position in the National Institute of Ranking Framework rankings in June this year which in itself is a historic achievement has helped it emerge as one of the leading universities in the country. Similarly, in the same year the Punjabi University has also been positioned at 18th rank among public sector universities across the country and first among the State universities in Punjab in the national rankings by the Education World.
