Frog tanks, baby goats and fizzy drinks: The latest bizarre excuses Melbourne lockdown dodgers have come up with when confronted by police

Victorians are continuing to come up with bizarre reasons for breaking lockdown restrictions, with another slew of ludicrous excuses offered to police. 

Officers handed out 174 fines to people in a 24-hour period for breaching official health directions, police said on Tuesday.

The fines included 31 people who failed to wear a mask and 55 who breached the state's curfew. 

One man attempted to dodge a checkpoint on the Calder Freeway before he explained he was driving to help a friend take care of their baby goats on a farm.

Another man was spotted driving erratically in in Brimbank, in Melbourne's western suburbs.

When the man was pulled over, he told police he had travelled outside his 5km limit to pick up a fish tank for his frog.

Police spotted a woman walking along a street in Melbourne after 8pm. She told officers she was getting a fizzy drink from the shops.

Another man was spotted sitting around at Upfield Railway Station after the curfew time of 8pm without a mask.  

When he was asked why he was outside despite the curfew, he told officers he 'didn't care' and was fined.

Victoria recorded another 222 cases of coronavirus and 17 deaths on Tuesday.

The figures are a significant drop from the a record high of 725 cases on August 6 and Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton said he expects the numbers to drop even further.

Melbourne entered Stage 4 lockdown on August 2 and a curfew was introduced from 8pm until 5am. The rest of the state was subject to Stage 3 restrictions at 11.59pm on August 5.
