Victoria records 25 coronavirus deaths, 282 new cases
Another 25 people have died of coronavirus in Victoria in the past day, and the state has recorded 282 new cases.
It marks the deadliest day for Australia since the pandemic began and brings the number of deaths in Australia to 421.
However, new cases are not significantly higher than in recent days.
Premier Daniel Andrews said on Sunday morning while the case numbers were encouraging, it was too early to ease restrictions.
"These numbers are heading in the right direction," he said on Sunday.
"I am, and always was, very cautious, but there is on my part at least, a cautious optimism and a sense of real hope that this strategy is working and that we are seeing numbers fall now."
An inquiry into Victoria’s hotel quarantine program, which has been linked with the state’s second wave of COVID-19, resumes today.
