Karnataka: Covid-19 cases dip in the coastal districts for third straight day

MANGALURU/UDUPI: There was further reduction in new positive cases of coronavirus reported in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada(DK)on Monday. Against 512 and 466 cases respectively on Saturday and Sunday, the coastal districts combined for a tally of 414 cases with Udupi accounting for 270 and Dakshina Kannada 144 cases. Covid-19 related death toll in the districts too was nine with DK accounting for eight of those and Udupi one.
Most cases in Udupi - 114 were from primary contacts, source of infection in 83 people is under investigation, 62 diagnosed with influenza like illness and 10 with severe acute respiratory infection and one was reported in a domestic traveller. Sixty-eight percent of the new cases - 184 were asymptomatic, DC G Jagadeesha said, adding Kundapur accounted for 141 of these cases Udupi 107, Karkala 15 and seven from outside the district.
Noting that 50% of new cases on an average are emerging from primary contacts, Jagadeesha in a video message appealed to all identified as positive to correctly identify these contacts in a bid to arrest its spread. He also urged people being informed of their positive status from the control room to cooperate with authorities in either opting for home or institutional quarantine and transgressions will be dealt with as per provisions of law, he warned.
In Dakshina Kannada, 60 of the 144 new cases were diagnosed as ILI, 16 as people with SARI, source of infection in 47 is being traced and 21 are primary contacts. Unlike Udupi, 53.5% or 77 new cases were saw people symptomatic of the virus, DC Dr K V Rajendra said, adding 88 of these cases were reported from Mangaluru taluk, 18 from Bantwal 10 from Belthangady, eight in Puttur, one from Sullia and 19 cases were patients from other districts.
With 209 patients discharged in DK on the day, including 96 from home isolation and 13 from covid care centres, the active cases dipped to 2091 against total 9022 positive cases. The total fatalities with eight cases, patients with co-morbid conditions rose to 277. Authorities discharged 269 patients in Udupi including 184 from home isolation taking total discharges to 5630 and reducing active cases to 2537 against total active cases of 8245.
