Daughter-in-law reports builder, his son to cops

Fizu Patel, daughter-in-law of Popular Builders’ Raman Patel, alleges she has been facing torture for 8 years; she was allegedly thrashed by her husband a fortnight ago when she objected to her mother being abused; names husband, parents-in-law and her father in FIR

The daughter-in-law of a highprofile builder in the city, who was allegedly thrashed by her husband over a fortnight ago, has accused her inlaws of torturing her physically and mentally for almost eight years now. Giving details of the assault on her, she said abuses were hurled at her and her mother by her husband, in-laws and her own father. An FIR in the case was registered on Sunday at Vastrapur police station.

Fizu Patel (32), the complainant, got married to Maunang Patel, son of Raman Patel of Popular Builders, in 2011. The couple has an eight-year-old daughter. Theirs was an arranged marriage — her in-laws had seen her photograph on a social media platform and approached her mother for her hand in marriage. Fizu alleged that Maunang and his parents started torturing her a year after marriage. As per the FIR, her torture began in November 2012.

The FIR further stated that on August 1 this year, family members and relatives of the couple had gathered at their house in Popular Park Bungalows on 132-ft Ring Road in Satellite to celebrate their daughter’s birthday.


Her parents, who had divorced 25 years ago, too were invited. While the guests left, her parents stayed back. That night, around 11pm, when they were having a conversation, her inlaws allegedly began to abuse her and her mother. Her father-in-law, Raman Patel, chided her for not getting any dowry and marrying his son for money, Fizu claimed.

He allegedly called the motherdaughter looters and asked his son to throw Fizu out. Her father Mukesh Patel began instigating them, she alleged. She stated that later, when she and her mother went to the guest room at around 3.30 am, Maunang and her father came there. The former allegedly started abusing her mother.

When she objected, he slapped her a few times and punched her on the nose. Her mother tried to save her, but was beaten up, Fizu alleged. The assault left her with a fractured nose and broken tooth and rendered her semiconscious. Jankiben called up police control room 100. However, Fizu’s inlaws allegedly threw her, her mother and daughter out of the house.

Maunang also threatened her with dire consequences if she filed a police complaint, she claimed. Fizu told the police that her mother took her to a private hospital a day later where doctors detected the fracture in the nose. In her FIR, she alleged that Raman Patel had held her hand in the past with wrong intentions.

Talking to Mirror, Janki Patel said that Maunang and his family members were pressurising them to return the couple’s daughter to them. “Currently my granddaughter is with us, but they are pressurising us to get her back,” she said.

Calls and SMSes made to both Ramanbhai Patel and Maunang Patel remained unanswered. When a Mirror team visited their residence near Shivranjini, the security guard informed them that the family members were not present there.

Vastrapur PI YB Jadeja said, “The case has been registered and currently we are gathering all the evidence in the matter. Further investigation is on.”
