NEW DELHI: Suspended Congress leader Sanjay Jha on Monday claimed that as many as 100 Congress leaders, including lawmakers, have written to Congress president Sonia Gandhi urging for a change in political leadership of the party and transparency in Congress Working Committee (CWC) elections.
Jha in a tweet said that the leaders have been "distressed at the state of affairs within the party."
Congress had suspended Jha in July this year for indulging in "anti-party activities and breach of discipline" after his July 14 tweet in which he had criticized Congress and supported Sachin Pilot amidst Rajasthan political crisis.
Demand for transparent processes to elect people in leadership roles is not new in Congress.
Sonia Gandhi took over as interim Congress president after her son Rahul Gandhi quit the post last year, taking responsibility for Congress' poor performance in the national election.
Following Rahul Gandhi's resignation and during Sonia's interim rule, there have been repeated requests by party workers to appoint Rahul Gandhi back to the post of president, however, the 50-year-old has been consistent in his denial.
Sonia's one-year term was to end on August 10 but the party said she would continue till a "proper procedure" was implemented in the "not too distant future" to elect the new party chief.
Jha is not alone in his criticism of Congress. Shashi Tharoor and Sandeep Dikshit, son of late Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit, had recently expressed displeasure over the party leadership’s failure to find a new president.
