MANGALURU: Digital valuation could well become the new normal. While students at least for the time being in this new normal will continue to write their examinations on paper, lecturers valuing the answer scripts will do so poring through the scanned copies of these coded scripts in dedicated yet decentralised internet laboratories of educational institutions and not under a centralised valuation system that they hitherto were accustomed to.

Embarking on this paradigm shift is Mangalore University which successfully experimented with the process for answer scripts of MBA course. With examination for sixth semester UG course and fourth semester PG course scheduled to start from September 16, the university has already identified 16 centres - four each in DK, Udupi and Kodagu and kept four in reserve for the purpose and valuation is expected to start from the first week of October.

P L Dharma, registrar (evaluation), Mangalore University told TOI that the three nodal officers – one for each of the above districts – will inspect the colleges identified for digital evaluation from August 17. “We have identified colleges that offer BCA/MCA courses for they generally have computer laboratories with the latest infrastructure for the purpose,” he said, adding the nodal officers will check for additional requirements that the colleges may need.

Expressing apprehension about the ability of colleges in Kodagu district ravaged by natural calamity to be part of the process although the university has identified colleges in that district for evaluation, Dharma said the university might have to go for plan B if they are unable to come on board for perceivable reasons. Computer laboratories of some of these colleges have remained shut since March 25 and need system validation, he said.

The new normal could also necessitate delegation of powers vested in the chairpersons of board of examiners (BoE) for each subject to supervise valuation to senior lecturers in the subjects in the respective districts. “We will discuss this with chairpersons of BoE at a meeting scheduled during the week,” he said. The new normal could also see the more computer literate youth shoulder much of the valuation responsibilities, Dharma noted.

With the Syndicate, highest decision-making body of the university in favour of these radical changes and vice-chancellor P S Yadapadithaya already committed to bend procedures in a bid to help the students, Dharma said the valuation process in the new normal could mean additional financial outgo for the university. “We will have to help the colleges with increasing their band width, fuelling up their generators to ensure uninterrupted valuation,” he noted.
